The Polestar Optimization package is a software upgrade with the ability to drastically improve performance on all Volvo models from 2016 forward, not just the Volvo Engineered by Polestar trims. Additionally, a Polestar Optimization package has been available on Volvo vehicles since as far back as the 2006 model year, but eligibility depends on a few variables.

The goal is for you to experience what we like to call a more "balanced and intuitive" drive. Volvo Cars models with AWD and eAWD receive an additional tuning spec that sends more power to the rear wheels to improve cornering agility. Finally, contrary to other vehicles and performance enhancements, there is little to no impact on fuel consumption and emissions.

Polestar Optimization vs. Polestar Engineered Trims
Whether you're new to the Volvo Cars brand or have been scanning our inventory for that perfect model, you've likely heard about specific models with a specialized trim called "Polestar Engineered," which is also referred to by enthusiasts as "Volvo Engineered by Polestar." So, is that the same thing as a Polestar Optimization? No. There are benefits to both variants, and the following overview will flesh out the details:
- Volvo Polestar Engineered Trims: For 2025, these trims include the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid (which is only available in the Polestar Engineered trim) and the Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid Polestar Engineered. Both of these models are efficient plug-in hybrids. Both of them achieve 455 horsepower. Both of them ride on a specially tuned chassis for enhanced control and agility. Both use unique Brembo® high-performance brakes. Both have advanced dual-flow valve suspension systems. Finally, both of them have exclusive detailing such as emblems, embroidery, colors, wheels, and more. These Volvo Engineered by Polestar models are enhanced with both hardware and software.
- Vehicles With Polestar Optimization: As you might suspect, these vehicles may or may not be hybrid models, and they won't have the limited edition styling and components as the Polestar Engineered vehicles. However, the advantage of this Volvo Polestar upgrade is that it can work on nearly all fuel-injected models. In other words, you can drive any Volvo model with the T4, T5, T6, B5, B6, or T8 powertrain and enjoy the benefit of Polestar Optimization across all platforms. You cannot turn a Volvo XC60 B5 model into a Polestar Engineered model, but you can give it the Polestar Optimization.
Volvo Polestar Engineered is a trim level that bestows next-level performance to select Volvo Plug-In Hybrid models. With decades of racetrack expertise backing Polestar, they begin by tuning the chassis for enhanced handling precision. The Volvo Engineered by Polestar trim adds advanced Öhlins shocks for even greater agility, beefy Brembo® brakes for confident control, lightweight forged wheels for style and performance points, and most importantly, an improved power output.
You can find the Volvo Polestar Engineered trim level on select Volvo Plug-In Hybrid models for sale in Rockville, MD. Specifically, the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid wagon and Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid SUV have the Polestar Engineered trim level for the 2025 model year. The 2023 Volvo S60 had a Polestar trim, but it was discontinued in 2024. All 2016 or later Volvo models can also receive Polestar Optimization software.
The Volvo Polestar Engineered trim level typically does not add horsepower. This trim level focuses on racetrack-ready handling, adding powerful upgrades like a tuned chassis, high-performance Brembo® brakes, advanced Öhlins suspension, and specialized wheels to provide a refined yet agile ride, along with the standard 455-horsepower output.
The Polestar Optimization software package, though, can boost mid-range horsepower by around 10%, depending on the vehicle.
