Volvo PHEV SUVs, Volvo BEV SUVs, Volvo MHEV SUVs & the Alphabet Soup of Electrification
Volvo Cars has set an initial goal to have at least half of its sales include electrified vehicles by 2025. So how does Volvo Cars stack the odds in its favor toward meeting that goal? Ensure that all new Volvo vehicles will be electrified in some shape or form. Many reading this know that electrified vehicles have been on the road for 20 years now. Mainly as hybrids. But what to make of all these new variants such as mild-hybrids (MHEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fully electric vehicles (EVs). Is there a difference? Is one better than the other? Let's clear up some of the terminology:
- Hybrid Vehicles - This type of electric vehicle is the fork in the road for the rest of the electrified vehicle family tree. These vehicles offered a tandem battery/internal combustion engine that was self-charging. Both power sources aided in propulsion.
- Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles - As the name might suggest, any Volvo plug-in hybrid SUV, car, or wagon offers external charging. A unique advantage with this type of electrified vehicle is that you can drive them as you would a conventional hybrid vehicle or switch on-demand to fully electric mode. The average pure electric range for a Volvo plug-in hybrid SUV, car, or wagon, is about 20 miles.1 And to simplify, we commonly refer to our PHEVs as "hybrids." If external charging isn't available, your gas engine will take over without any required input from you once your battery is depleted.
- Mild Hybrid Vehicles - This type of electrified vehicle is not to be confused with a conventional hybrid. A conventional hybrid vehicle uses combustion and electricity to move the vehicle forward. In a mild hybrid vehicle, electrification is applied to the engine exclusively. This technology reduces strain and load on the engine, which allows for smooth acceleration, increased performance, and improved mpg.
- Battery Electric Vehicles - Is a bit of an old-school way of saying EV (or electric vehicle). BEVs and EVs are one and the same. Neither makes use of an internal combustion engine and is fully electrified. Self-charging occurs through regenerative braking, but this action prolongs battery life. It doesn't recharge the battery fully. External charging will always be required.
